Hiking in Old Perithia
Old Perithia is the perfect base camp to hike up Mount Pantokrator – the highest mountain on the island at 906 metres. The summit offers mesmerising views over the whole of Corfu as well as Albania, which is quite close by. On particularly clear days it is also possible to see Italy, despite it being around 130 km away. At the top there is a café and a monastery, whose predecessor was originally built in 1347. The hiking trail from Old Perithia is the best route to walk to the summit and it takes around 1.5 hours each way.
There are many other hiking routes, including a 2-hour walking path to the beautiful village of Lafki, which offers spectacular scenery as well as fantastic backdrop views of Old Perithia.
If you enjoy longer hiking trails, you can venture on the path to Krinias and even further. A round trip to Krinias will take 3 to 4 hours, including picture breaks. Another hour beyond Krinias will take you to Acharavi, where you can reward yourself with refreshments, before taking a taxi back to Merchant House.
Corfu Trail
We are also on the route of the very popular Corfu Trail – a seven to ten day walking adventure that takes you through some of the island’s most dramatic landscapes. An overnight stay in the Merchant’s House on route to the mountains is highly recommended to relax, recharge and give you a taste of life in the Corfu mountains before the final day of the trail to Agios Spiridion.
